Boolean operations combine two or more shapes to create new complex shapes. Use them to create cutouts, merged shapes, and interesting forms.
Boolean Types
- Union - Combines all shapes into one
- Subtract - Cuts the top shape from the bottom
- Intersect - Keeps only the overlapping area
- Exclude - Keeps everything except the overlap
Applying Boolean Operations
- Select two or more overlapping shapes
- Right-click and choose a Boolean operation
- Or use the menu: Object > Boolean > [Operation]
Union (Add)
Combines all selected shapes into a single shape:
- Great for creating complex silhouettes
- Merges overlapping areas
- Takes fill/stroke from the topmost shape
Subtract (Minus Front)
Uses the top shape to cut a hole in the bottom shape:
- Create cutouts and negative space
- Top shape is removed after operation
- Essential for icon design
Intersect
Keeps only where shapes overlap:
- Creates the common area of all shapes
- Useful for cropping to specific shapes
- All non-overlapping areas are removed
Exclude (XOR)
Keeps everything except the overlap:
- Creates a donut effect with two circles
- Opposite of Intersect
- Creates interesting negative patterns
Non-Destructive Booleans
Boolean groups preserve the original shapes:
- Double-click the boolean group to edit components
- Move or resize the original shapes
- Change the boolean type at any time
- Flatten to merge permanently
Flattening
Convert boolean groups to simple paths:
- Right-click and choose "Flatten"
- Creates a single, editable path
- Cannot be undone (original shapes are merged)
Tips
- Order matters for Subtract - place the cutter on top
- Use multiple shapes at once for complex operations
- Boolean groups can contain other boolean groups
- Perfect for creating icons and logos
- Use with the Shape Builder tool for interactive combining
